(· the philosophy)

Marquees are often treated as blank canvases to be filled. In reality, they are architectural frameworks that require proportion, flow, and clarity to work well — particularly when placed within gardens, heritage venues, and culturally significant settings.

Planning a marquee wedding requires a deeper understanding of proportion, flow and collaboration between suppliers.

(· why marquee weddings)

Participants will see how a marquee environment is planned, built, styled and ultimately experienced — gaining insight into the small but critical decisions that transform a temporary structure into a considered event space.

Every decision carries weight: the orientation of the structure; the way light moves through the space throughout the day; the placement of tables, linens and florals; the movement of guests through the environment.

09:00 Guests arrive for tea, coffee and pastries within the walled garden at Fulham Palace.

09:30
An open conversation about building Events by James — the realities of growing a planning business, the decisions that shaped the studio, and why no two planners approach weddings in exactly the same way.

10:30
Participants step inside the marquee as the environment continues to take shape. James will walk through the operational structure behind the build, including the run-of-show schedule used to coordinate suppliers and the level of detail required when working within a historic Grade I listed venue such as Fulham Palace.

This session explores:
• how marquee build schedules are structured
• coordinating suppliers within tight timeframes
• communicating with venues and production teams
• managing logistics during a live installation

11:30 The workshop then moves into the final preparation of the guest-facing environment. James will guide participants through the process step by step, sharing how he reads a space and the small visual details that elevate a wedding from the ground up — from table alignment and linen handling to the subtle finishing touches that create a sense of intention.

12:30 A relaxed lunch within the marquee setting.

13:15 Participants will have the opportunity to capture professional headshots within the marquee environment.

Do I need prior experience to attend?

This workshop is designed for those who already have a foundational understanding of their craft, whether in planning, floristry, or photography. The focus is on refining your approach, developing confidence within marquee environments, and building work that translates into a professional portfolio.

Is this a styled shoot or a real working environment?

The experience is designed to mirror a real wedding setup rather than a fast-paced styled shoot. Each element is built and styled in real time, allowing you to work within believable conditions and understand how events come together in practice.

How many people will be attending?

Group sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure a considered, high-quality experience. This allows for better access to each setup, more focused guidance, and a calmer working environment throughout the day.

What should I bring with me?

You don’t need to bring anything beyond your usual working essentials. All materials for the floristry workshop are provided, and the planning and photography sessions are fully guided. If you are attending the photography workshop, we recommend bringing your preferred camera equipment. The focus of the day is on observation, participation and refinement — not preparation.

How will this benefit my work long term?

The aim of The Considered Space is to shift how you approach your work. After The Marquee Edition workshops, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how marquee environments are designed and experienced, along with practical insight that can be applied directly to your own projects. For photographers, this includes portfolio-ready imagery. For planners and florists, it’s a deeper understanding of how to create work that feels considered, cohesive and professionally executed.
